MEMORY SPACE: CHINATOWN AR

FALL 2023 · AUGMENTED REALITY

Niantic Time Capsule Challenge 2024 - Gold Prize Winner

Exhibited at Union Station in Los Angeles, Memory Space: Chinatown AR is an augmented reality experience that makes the past visible.

The goal of this project was to geo-locate historic photographic images of Los Angeles’s first Chinatown onto the very site where they were originally taken. Built on the 8thWall mobile AR platform, the experience allows visitors to view archival images through their mobile devices, superimposed onto the actual location of the former buildings.

As participants move through the station and surrounding area, they retrace the steps of the original photographers and enter portals into fully realized 3D street scenes of the old Chinatown community. The project incorporates VPS wayspots, Arcturus Holostream, generative AI imagery and video, interlinked 8thWall projects, and interactive characters using the Inworld 8thWall module.

My role focused on 3D asset creation, referencing old archival photos to accurately recreate architectural details and cultural elements of historic Chinatown. These assets allowed users to step into reconstructed environments that honored the history of the community while leveraging AR to provide an immersive, location-based storytelling experience.
